In the United States, our Thanksgiving Day holiday is here. This is the rollout to a month of anticipation, preparation and celebration that ends with Christmas on December 25.
Tomorrow, .the first holiday activity (by tradition) is watching Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade .. the opening to the Christmas season in New York City ... then comes what is to many families the largest most elaborate meal of the year. Guests are part of the fun ... guests bringing special dishes, desserts, appetizers or wine add to the various tasty treats, and those who just come to help with the eating and merriment, are all very welcome. After dinner, TV sports or a quick game of ball outside when the weather is nice takes us into evening. Leftovers turn into plates of sandwiches and various tid bits not served with the main meal. Then, at my house, some go home while a few stay for a cut throat game of Talisman - a Thanksgiving tradition with my family and friends. This can last from 2 to 4 hours until a winner seizes the Crown of Command and holds the title until the second game on New Years Day. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talisman_(board_game)
Thanksgiving falls on the last Thursday in November and many people (not in retail) get the rest of the weekend off work. The following day is Black Friday, when stores celebrate the first day of Christmas business by putting some very choice items on sale at a big savings and, thereby, encourage shoppers to get up before daylight to take advantage of the stores' early openings before the sale items sell out.
I'd like to wish Peter and everyone who stops by and looks in here Happy Holidays, 2014.
C'mon in and join us in sharing your own holiday traditions.
