A comparison between UK and American Police officers on street duty. A lone officer on duty in a city centre is confronted by a drugged up psycho wielding a samurai sword, coming straight at him with murderous intent. How should he react? What should he consider?
British PC. 1)The prime motivation must be to consider the poor man's human rights. a)could he be a recently arrived immigrant; not familiar with British law? b)does he appear poor and oppressed? c)could the apparent weapon be a ceremonial accessory to his religion? d)has my conduct and/or appearance contributed to his attack? e)could my uniform have provoked this attack? f)perhaps I can reason with him and discuss his problems sympathetically g)can I possibly disarm him with my baton? Why am I carrying a baton anyway, and what sort of message does this send out? h)if I strike him with my baton, perhaps he will be injured. He would then of course be perfectly entitled to sue me and the force for damages. I may lose my job, or even go to prison.
American Police officer.

That's sad but with all the bad things that have happened this year, I'm not going to argue about it. Too many city police forces have been decked out with military style equipment and weaponry. I don't know what they think they're gearing up for, but they seem to be getting itchy to put it into use.
