Jeremy Browne: Liberal Democrat party is now pointless
A Liberal Democrat former minister has suggested that his party has become pointless. In a fresh attack on the direction the Lib Dems are being taken in, Jeremy Browne said there was a lot of "conservatism" in the party and raised concerns that it "protects the state and the status quo". It comes after earlier criticism of "political procrastination" and claims that the Lib Dems have become the "brake on the Government rather than being an accelerator". In an interview with The Times, Mr Browne said: "Every political party and every politician has to be able to answer the question: if you didn't exist why would it be necessary to invent you Read the full story
The way things are looking for them at the moment I would say they are pointless

The problem for the Liberals is that when they were simply a minority party with absolutely no chance of ever being in government, they could espouse policies that were superficial, uncosted, unresearched; and based on the "hey, that's a good idea" sort of in depth consideration. Cleggie personifies this simplistic thinking to a T! Then came coalition, and the same holds true. Clegg continues the child-like simplistic approach even in government. Madcap ideas like free school meals for every pupil, when half the schools do not have kitchen facilities. Petulant policies; like reneging on a firm promise to back constituency reform. The more the electorate sees their true colours, the more irrelevant they have become. Pointless. Yep. That sums them up.

The Lib Dems are now desperately trying to back away from the coalition. They can't even boast about any policies they've implemented. The Tories are getting the credit for what good has been done and the Lib Dems getting the blame for the bad like tuition fees and no curbs on immigration.
If only Clegg had had the brains in 2010 to say "No. We aren't joining anybody. We'll support the policies we approve of whatever party they come from, Labour or Tory. And we'll vote against any policies we don't approve of in the same way."
Then he would have had both parties courting him and some real power instead of 20 powerless cabinet seats.
