Buy two bolts That’s all I want but I have to buy a packet What as happened to the small ironmonger who would gladly sell you two or even just one ? Put out by the likes of B&Q

There's a really good hardware shop near where I live and I try to use it instead of Do-it-All or B&Q. Use it or lose it, as the saying goes. I even went into a knitting shop recently and bought just one button! It can be done. It is a shame when these small shops have to close down because of the huge stores.

It is a shame, but I am afraid that it is the old story of the big fish eating the little fish. The smaller shops in many cases cannot compete with the prices or choices offered in the supermarkets. Then there is the convenience of the one stop shopping. We lost our fishmonger and one of the two butchers shops some years ago in our village because they could not compete with the local supermarket. The local supermarket is 10 miles away in the nearest town.

We used to have just such a shop in our village which closed not because of lack of support because it was very well supported But because the owner decided to retire

. The smaller shops in many cases cannot compete with the prices or choices offered in the supermarkets. In many cases the amount of shelf space in supermarkets devoted to pet food and other pet items alone is more than a village or corner shop has for its entire range if products
