Three of us were talking yesterday about “Dads Army” [probably one of the best comedy shows ever on TV”] when someone asked supposing it was not made when it was but today Who of to days actors could play the part as well as the original cast? We could not think of one
Who would you chose as the characters and what of other comedies of the past if they were brought back who would you cast in the various parts?

Hagen comments.:- Back in the days of Dads Army, there were many people who fought in WW2 alive but most are now dead so I think that there would be no demand for such a programme.
You could not replace Captain Mainwearing and his squad anyway, they were brilliant.
I note that tiresome lightweight, Ross slunk back to the Waffen-BBC, he will never be the same again now he has to watch himself.

Could you remake Dad's Army but update it to the TA?
But a remake of Dad's Army - how about Philip Franks as Captain Mainwaring and Andrew Whyment [who plays Kirk in Corrie] as Private Pike to get us started.

Hi Larkrise. I can't imagine him playing anything other than Kirk! Philip Franks...hmm...there's a name I haven't heard in a while, I used to love him in Buds of May. Perhaps a Vicar more than Capt?? Mind you, I haven't worked out where my two suggestions will fit into the cast yet, I just think they'd be funny.

just thought Franks did pompous quite well in 'Heartbeat' as the police officer
Yes, Fry and Laurie are possibles too. And how about 'Baldric' - Tony Robinson, for Private Walker.

Simon Pegg yehhhhh!!
We need some enemy soldier types too. Rowan Atkinson could be a villain soldier and Simon Pegg has to bludgeon him to... oh wait, that's not in the spirit of the old Dad's Army series ;D

A friend went to see a Dads Army presentation by an amateur dramatic group in Chester. It was a sellout for the entire week and he said it was brilliant. The only one that didn't quite fit was the warden but he was still good, just didn't look like the original whereas the others did.

Sounds good. I was toying with the idea that Ricky Gervais might do for someone but then realised that he has already done it ... ...it's the same set up, don't you think?

Ok, we'll let him be in the short list then ;D You mentioned Baldrick, I was thinking Rik Mayall also, funny how our minds are going to all the Blackadder actors. That really was an excellent comedy. #bowdown9ku#

How many people know that it was originally intended that Arthur Lowe would be the Sergeant and John Le mesuirer the captain
and what is it that makes the series still so popular today years after the last episode was filmed ?
i believe it is because not only is it funny but also because their was no vulgarity or bad languages in it It is a program you can sit and watch with anyone knowing they are not going to em brassed by swearing

I used to watch it after I came home from helping out at the local Brownie Pack and fall about laughing. The characters were just so identifiable. It was just true to life!
