In vino veritas.
I do so hate to be present when a husband and wife or just partners have a real domestic scene in a public place. I was caught in one last night and it was very embarrassing. The couple in question was a young Chinese woman who had an English older boyfriend with whom she had a child. She had quite a lot of drink inside her which I think emboldened her and loosened her tongue. She was protesting that the man did not love her because he refused to “church with her” meaning to get married. She was right in what she said about boat owners being able to up anchor and sail away (her partner had a yacht). A number of them have done so leaving some poor woman abandoned and sometime with a child to look after. It is a hazard that local women sometimes have to face when they take up with a man of the yachting community. Some of the men tire of the woman or girl they are with and want to offload them for a newer model so to speak. The Thai and Chinese women are pretty smart at seeing the signs when their man’s interest is waning or wandering and there are sometimes the most frightful scenes in public. It is even worse when you as a friend of both get dragged into the row. This happens when one or other turns to you for support and verification of what they are saying. You are then seen by the other as taking sides, especially if as a man you side with the man.
One of my worst memories of that same bar back in 1997 was when a woman of 50 or so found out that he husband had a young Thai girl on tow and was planning to dump his wife. She found out that her so called six close friends had been colluding with her husband to keep her in the dark till the last minute when he was going to tell her that he was leaving her. She came into the bar dressed in black with no makeup and looking ashen and her hair down. She went round the six of them with a tongue like a rapier and gave each one a verbal lashing that left them speechless. She then turned on her heels and swept out into the night having neither sat down or had a drink. The bar was in total silence for a minute as we were all stunned and nobody wanted to be the first to speak. It was one of those very horrible life experiences that one comes across from time to time. Last night was another one.
I am sure that others have had similar unpleasant experiences.
