Peter they are popular programmes so why deprive people of any pleasure they get from watching them? Apart for the BBC programmes. I have no desire to subsidise other people viewing choices through a tax.
Apart from that you can turn off a programme you don't like.

It's the last Big Brother this year anyway, (or was it last?). Eastenders may be on an up at the moment - (so they say) - but I think it's time has come - Miserable programme anyway - a bit like The Archers now. I'd like to see all stations restricted to just a handful of channels each (including Murdoch). Say six. That should be enough to give them a couple of 'everyday' channels, a sports channel, a movie channel or comedy channel etc. This country isn't big enough for the amount of channels we do have! The most depressing line in the Radio Times is the one at the bottom of the page which reads: All programmes listed are repeats, unless otherwise stated
