Hello all Geert Wilders is being put on trial for speaking the truth, which everyone else conveniently chooses to turn their backs on. This latest effort to stifle free speech in IMHO will cost the democratic world dearly, in terms of its cherished ideals of liberty, free speech and the democratic way of life itself. Looks like this is the piece being discussed. His impending imprisonment and the ban of his film criticising Islam. Sorry the article is nearly a year old, I had trouble finding anything more recent. Maybe the trial is in progress news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7314636.stmI wonder if they would have gone to all this effort if the film had been about Christianity or Atheists?

Toby comments.:- The Dutch government really shot themselves in their own arses with this.
The Dutch people hate for their Politicians to be bullied like this and it is worth a raft of votes to Wilders.
It is a long way from a trial at the moment by the way !
What is on trial is the right of freedom of speech, the governing party also their partners are not really wanting a trial and I reckon they will wriggle out some way.

What is on trial is the right of freedom of speech... I totally agree with you Hagen. It is the freedom of speech that is being put on trial along with the man of course. Indeed, his trial looks a long way at this moment. But does the guy not deserve the right to express his opinion in his own country with out being bullied by his own political counterparts who pander to every whim of the community (you know the name which is hell bent on imposing their own law, which is nothing but barbaric, to put it mildly. Anyway, here is the link to another article : www.iht.com/articles/ap/2009/01/21/europe/EU-Netherlands-Hate-Speech.phpRegards nirakara

Once you start to deny people the freedom of speech it is IMO the beginning of the end of democracy Very true. The beginning of the end of democracy starts with pandering and it is already in full swing. The sooner people realise it and do something about it before it is too late, the better. The decision to prosecute Geert Wilders for stating the facts and speaking the truth is appalling. Politicians (anywhere in the world) should stop the blatant pandering before democracy becomes a thing of past.

Thank you Moto, for that most useful link. Also see: news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/7626533.stm Excerpt:
Presenting the document, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said religious freedom was "at the core of our nation".
"The United States rejects actions that are offensive to particular religious traditions, but we do not condone the prohibition of free speech. That only weakens societies," she said.
She was particularly critical of attempts to outlaw criticism of religions under a principle known as "defamation of religions", which has been championed in the UN by Islamic countries.
"Instead of protecting religious practice and promoting tolerance, this concept seeks to limit freedom of speech and that could undermine the standards of international religious freedom," she said. That day has been brought another step closer when the Chinese standard becomes universal in all Islamic countries. Live long and prosper, as long as you can. Prashna

No, not Fitna. It's the Combination.news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7917397.stmExcerpt:
The Combination, directed by David Field, is set in late 2005, when ugly race riots between white and Lebanese Australians flared at the city's Cronulla Beach.
They sparked a series of retaliatory attacks in which shops, churches and cars were targeted
The film uses actual news footage from the riots as it follows the fortunes of a Lebanese Australian man who is trying to guide his younger brother away from ethnic gang violence.
Ms Zitserman said: "[It] is a powerful, critically acclaimed work that has touched a nerve with the Australian public and deserves to be seen by everyone." Live long and prosper, as long as you can. Prashna

Actually, prashna, Australia is very big on censorship. For instance, the Fallout games (set in a post-nuclear setting) has the use of drugs involved - not cocaine or the like but stimulants and such. Australia refused to allow the game in the country until the meds/drugs were removed from the game. With games and films, they are very big on controlling what is allowed, even if the objection is based on ignorance
