UpdateI have just found one place that is using a horse this summer on the Montgomery Canal. They have a Xbreed horse about the size of a Shire to drag the boat along. This is a project in conjuction with British Waterways. Good

As I said earlier - nothing nicer than a horse - back to nature, I say!

So, did anyone 'take the plunge' & go narrowboating for the first time?
My wife & our 2 youngest kids had a few days last Easter on the Coventry Canal from Tamworth. Very good it was too. 4 of us in a 6-berth 55-foot boat with all mod cons. Good weather, (mostly) pleasant scenery & some good pubs en route!
My First Mate (AKA my 15-year old son) was absolutely shattered after we ascended the Atherstone Lock Staircase ;D
My 11-year old daughter was most impressed with the Aqueduct that we went across.
My wife just enjoyed being able to sit back & let the rest of us get on with things. Would we go again? DEFINITELY!

I have never done it but I have friends who wouldn't do anything else. One of them actually has a shareholding in a boat.

I spent most of the mid 90's with my nose in Canal and Riverboat (magazine)- It's one of my dreams! I'd love to have a break on one too - but the cost!!! I'd have to take some (very good) friends along to help pay the way! My ideal job would be a bargee - chugging up and down the Grand Union with whatever load on board <sigh> Some of the best pubs too! Used to be a smashing one near Godalming Boat House that brewed it's own beer - it shut down about five years back - damn shame - great place.
